Newmarket Music is proud to announce the forthcoming debut release After All from emerging Melbourne jazz musician James Carter.
The launch for After All will be held at Bennetts Lane on Sunday 9th September at 9pm and is being presented by The Melbourne Improvisers Collective (www.melbimprov.com).
With Christian Meyer (Adam Katz, Phoebe Lindner Group) on guitar, Daniel Sheehan (Infinite Ape, Paul Williamson) on piano, Ben Christensen (Chelsea Wilson, Frankie Wants Out, Phoebe Lindner Group) on double bass and James Carter on alto saxophone, the James ‘Larry’ Carter Quartet is a talented bunch in their own right. The quartet was formed after an eighteen month-long residency that saw them develop a distinct and individual musical identity. Trained in the tradition of jazz and improvised music, these four musicians share a desire to create a simpler sound.
After All combines the energy and tradition of American jazz with the sensitivity and melodic intricacy of European improvised music and the chamber-like qualities of Western Classical music. The majority of the material was composed by James Carter as a suite after a period of study in New York City and can be likened to a song cycle in classical music or a concept album in popular music.
James graduated from Monash University in 2009 with a Bachelor of Music with Honours. His studies saw him fortunate enough to study under prominent Australian jazz figures Julien Wilson, Jamie Oehlers, Rob Burke, Ian Whitehurst and Tim Wilson, as well as Mirko Guerrini (Italy), Jean-Michel Pilc (France/USA) and George Garzone (USA).
James is no stranger to a live setting, having performed at major festivals across the country including the Wangaratta Jazz Festival and the Melbourne International Jazz Festival, and in many of Melbourne’s celebrated jazz venues, including Bennetts Lane, Uptown Jazz Café, Paris Cat, Café 303 and Dizzy’s, as well as performing live for PBS and 3MBS radio.
